There was a meeting between Facilities and Ms. Thompson this morning. Though I was not invited, I did exchange a few pleasantries when I passed by Claudio Bazzano. He was carrying a large binder with an image of gray-ish water in a cup, and a title: Mary Hooker Water Quality. The existence of this binder put me in mind of my FOIA request, as yet unanswered. I did ask Claudio if they had checked on potential copper problems at other schools, a question that he had not answered in my email request. He indicated that "we want to get this one right first."
I learned some things about water chemistry. It is important to know whether water is corrosive--meaning metals leach from the plumbing, or scale-forming--meaning that minerals deposit and prevent leaching. I had been puzzled by the fact that MDC's water is of neutral pH. So how could non-acidic water be corrosive? It has to do with two other variables: water hardness, and alkalinity. MDC's water is quite soft, and low in alkalinity, therefore corrosive even at neutral pH.
